  18. <p>     Just a few years ago, IBM dominated its Japanese rivals so
  19. completely that Tokyo experts quipped, "When IBM sneezes,
  20. Japanese computer makers are blown away." No longer. Last week
  21. Fujitsu, Japan's largest computer company, unveiled what it
  22. called the highest-performance general-purpose computer in the
  23. world. The timing of the announcement stole thunder from IBM,
  24. which the next day introduced its own new generation of
  25. mainframe machines. IBM touted the new computers as its most
  26. important roll-out in 25 years.

  28. <p>     The head-to-head battle pits IBM's reputation for
  29. reliability against the raw number-crunching power of the
  30. Fujitsu machines. Fujitsu said its largest new computer can
  31. perform up to 600 million instructions per second, vs. an
  32. estimated 210 MIPS for IBM. But U.S. experts noted that
  33. corporations tend to be more interested in access to a wide
  34. range of software--a traditional strong point of IBM systems--than in high speeds.
